Why have a handicap
Experienced Golfers: Golf allows friendly and serious competition between players of differing abilities. A handicap enables golfers to compete fairly - each player with the opportunity to succeed. Since many EWGA golf events include some type of competition, members with USGA handicaps ensure that they compete fairly with the other EWGA members. In addition a member must have a handicap to represent Tucson in the Desert Dove Match Play competition against the Phoenix chapter, to participate in the State Medallion series, to be eligible for the President's Cup, and to compete in the EWGA Championship Series which begins with the Chapter Championship.
Newer Golfers: In addition to the reasons listed above, a handicap can gives tangible evidence of improvement. Many of our new players also suggest that having a handicap makes one feel like a real golfer. For most competitions, we allow higher handicap players to participate but they must play at a maximum of 40.4. The exception is the Chapter Championship Stroke play division. A player must be 40.4 or below to compete.
What at do I need to establish a handicap?
To set up a handicap, please collect information on five or more 18 hole rounds you've played. If you are using the Golf Life Management System, you will enter this information on-line at the www.ewga.com website. After paying your AWGA dues of $30, go to awga.org and establish your egolf account, allowing you to post online. Select "away" and a drop down menu of all Arizona courses will appear. Chose the course, tees from which you played and follow the instructions. If you played out of state, you can still post by selecting the first item "non rated awga courses". Contact our Handicap Chair, Judi Davis, with questions handicaps@ewgatucson.org
Cost of an AWGA handicap is $30, and the handicap is good from January 1 thru December 31 of the current year. You will need to renew the handicap by December29, 2009 for continuous service. Cost of the EWGA Golf Life Management System handicap is included in your EWGA Membership dues.
What if I have a handicap thru another organization?
If you have a USGA Handicap through another golf organization this can be utilized for all EWGA competition except the AWGA State Medallion series. To participate in the Medallion, you may also hold your handicap with EWGA Club of the AWGA, or be a dual member within the AWGA. Please contact the handicap committee at handicaps@ewgatucson.org for more information.
Excerpts from the AWGA website on handicaps:
The purpose of the USGA Handicap System is to make the game of golf enjoyable by enabling golfers of differing abilities to compete on an equitable basis. A golfer begins with a USGA Handicap Index and converts that to a Course Handicap based upon the Slope Rating of the golf course being played.
The handicap calculated reflects a golfer's "potential" ability to play the game. With this in mind, the system disregards unusually high holes played or rounds posted. One of the basic premises of the USGA system is that golfers will try to make the best score they can on each and every round they play. They will also post every acceptable round for peer review.
